Gadap Town (Sindhi: گڏاپ ٽائون , Urdu: گڈاپ ٹاؤن ) is a town in the northwestern part of Karachi with the Hub River on its western limits also forming the provincial border between Sindh and Balochistan, while to the north and east are Dadu District and the Kirthar Mountains.
Sindhis and Balochis form the absolute majority in the town. There are several groups in Gadap Town including Muhajirs, Punjabis, Kashmiris, Seraikis, Pakhtuns, local inhabitants, etc. Over 99% of the population is Muslim.
The federal government introduced local government reforms in the year 2000, which eliminated the previous third tier of government (administrative divisions) and raised the fourth tier (districts) to become the new third tier. The effect in Karachi was the dissolution of the former Karachi Division and the merger of its five districts to form a new Karachi City-District with eighteen autonomous constituent towns including Gadap Town.
Gadap is Balochi word. Gad means mountain goat and aap means water: the place where mountain goats come for water.
The neighbourhoods of Murad Memon Goth (Mula Essa Goth), Gujro, Maymarabad and Yousuf Goth are densely populated whereas the remaining areas are mostly rural, especially Gadap neighbourhood which is the largest union council by area of Karachi.
There over 400 rural villages in Gadap Town.1 Some of the rural villages of Gadpap Town are Old Thana Village, Mula Essa Goth, Jam Goth, Memon Goth, Haji Miandad Goth, Samoon Goth, Haji Murad Jaffar Goth, Darsano Chhano, Kathore, Saleh Mohammad Goth, Kohi Goth, etc.
