Houston County /ˈhstən/ is a county in the U.S. state of Georgia. It is part of the Warner Robins, Georgia Metropolitan Statistical Area. Its county seat is Perry.1 As of the 2010 census, the population was 139,900.2

Houston County was created on May 15, 1821, as one of five counties in the state, and later reduced in size with the formation of Bibb, Crawford, Pike, Macon, and Peach counties.3

The county was named after Georgia governor John Houstoun, with the spelling being a common 19th century variation.4

Geography

According to the 2000 census, the county has a total area of 379.83 square miles (983.8 km2), of which 376.75 square miles (975.8 km2) (or 99.19%) is land and 3.08 square miles (8.0 km2) (or 0.81%) is water.5

As of the census8 of 2010, there were 139,900 people, 53,051 households, 58,325 housing units, and 37,874 families residing in the county. The racial makeup of the county was 63.3% White, 28.6% Black or African American, 0.3% Native American, 2.4% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 2.4% from other races, and 2.8% from two or more races. 6.1% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 53,051 households out of which 38.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.3% were married couples living together, 16.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.6% were non-families. 24% of all households were made up of individuals and 6.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.61 and the average family size was 3.09.

In the county the population was spread out with 29.6% under the age of 20, 20.9% from 20 to 34, 34.4% from 35 to 59, and 15.1% who were 60 years of age or older. The median age was 34.5 years.

The median income for a household in the county was $55,098. About 12.7% of the population were below the poverty line.
