There are currently 1254 genera, 155 families, 29 orders, and exactly 5963 species of described mammals, all in a single class.1 This is the most up to date list of mammal genera, going mostly by genetic evidenceaccording to whom?, and Groves and Grubbs' Taxonomy of Ungulates2 for the family Bovidae within Artiodactyla. The genus Bison is included within Bos in this classification and the genera Nyala (nyala), Strepsiceros (greater kudu), and Ammelaphus (lesser kudu) are all distinct genera from Tragelaphus (sitatunga, bushbuck, gedemsa or mountain nyala, and the bongo). This is all supported by mtDNA methods of differentiating species. Also, the genus Niumbaha (pied bat) has been split from Glauconycteris (butterfly bats) because of recent morphological differences discovered in a specimen in South Sudancitation needed. The genus Uncia is now included in Panthera.
