Naga Munchetty (born Sudha Nagalakshmi Munchetty-Chendriah; 25 February 1975) is a British journalist and television presenter. She currently presents BBC World News at 05:00 GMT on weekday mornings on BBC One, BBC News Channel and BBC World News and makes regular appearances on BBC Breakfast and is the main newsreader on The Andrew Marr Show. She previously presented BBC Two's weekday financial affairs programme Working Lunch alongside Declan Curry.

Early life

Born in Streatham, London, Naga Munchetty was a pupil of Graveney School. She studied English literature and language at Leeds University1 before returning to London to complete a postgraduate degree in newspaper journalism.

Career

She began reporting for Reuters Financial Television, then worked for CNBC Europe as a Senior Producer and then a Business Producer and Reporter for Channel 4 News.

Just before joining Working Lunch, Naga was a Senior Presenter for Bloomberg Television. There she covered stories connected with the health of the economy – guiding viewers through the start of the credit crunch, the collapse of Northern Rock and the economic downturn that hit Britain and the rest of the world. At Bloomberg, Naga grilled central bankers, chief executives and fund managers.

Journalism

Munchetty's first job was as a journalist on the City Pages of the London Evening Standard.1 She also worked on the Business Section of The Observer.1

Broadcasting

Munchetty's television career began as a reporter for Reuters Financial Television, after which she worked as a senior producer for CNBC Europe, a business producer and reporter for Channel 4 News and a presenter on Bloomberg Television.1

Munchetty joined Working Lunch after the show was revamped in October 2008 and stayed with the programme until it finished in July 2010.2 Munchetty has hosted Radio 4's Money Box.3 She also reports from the City for BBC News, gauging the reaction to breaking financial stories such as the Budget,4 and the Pre-Budget Report.5

Since August 2010, Munchetty has presented early morning bulletins (UKT) on the BBC News Channel and BBC World News, as well as presenting relief on the news channel, Breakfast6 and The Andrew Marr Show.

Munchetty co-hosted The Spending Review – The South Today Debate on BBC One with Sally Taylor in September 2010.7

Munchetty also presented Paranormal Investigation: Live on Living on 30–31 October 2010 to celebrate Hallowe'en.8

In the Christmas 2012 episode of Celebrity Mastermind broadcast on BBC 2 on 2 January 2013 Munchetty beat her nearest competitor by five points with a score of 28, with her specialist subject The Ryder Cup 1979–2012.

Personal life

Munchetty has a passion for music and can play the jazz trumpet and classical piano.1 She also has a knack for making cocktails, a skill she learnt while working in bars and pubs during her student days.1 She lives with her husband James in Hertfordshire.

She won Celebrity Mastermind (broadcast on BBC TV on 2 January 2013) where she admitted to a passion for golf playing at least five times a week, and would like to take up the game as a professional. In October 2012 Naga, playing under her married name, won the prestigious Hertfordshire de Paula Cup at Bishop’s Stortford Golf Club.9 This competition is scratch match-play knockout for handicaps 10–18.
