Route description

The entire route runs no more than a few miles south parallel of the former Dallas-Fort Worth Turnpike (now Interstate 30, despite not intersecting with it. The highway begins as Lancaster Avenue from Interstate 35W just southeast of downtown Fort Worth. When it enters Arlington, it becomes Division Street. After entering Grand Prairie, it becomes Main Street. When it enters Dallas, it becomes Davis Street before becoming 8th street just east of Zang Boulevard in the Oak Cliff area of Dallas. From there it travels a short distance to its eastern terminus at Interstate 35E. The route was designated in 1991 to replace US 80 when it was decommissioned west of Dallas.

History

SH 180 was previously designated by 1933 as a connector route from Annona north to then-SH 5. This route had been previously designated as SH 5A, and was redesignated as Loop 23 by 1939, and FM 44 by 1942.
