Early life
Tep Rindaro was born in village of Samrong, Battambang province, in western Cambodia and had a passion for films since the early age. His father had forbid him from pursuing a career in the film industry but Tep Rindaro had already made up his mind, secretly. His father wanted him to become a doctor and because he was a good child, Rindaro decided to at least study something practical. In 1981, he got a scholarship to study in Russia as an airplane mechanic, but he continued to dream of stardom. He worked as a mechanic mainly for the benefit of his parents. In 1984, he returned from Russia to Cambodia with qualifications, but with no employment opportunities available in Phnom Penh at the time, Tep once again left Cambodia. Since there was no need for employments at the Pochentong airport of Cambodia, Tep decided to leave for Vietnam and work at Ho Chi Minh's airport for three years.
Career
Early succes
While returning home from Ho Chi Minh City in 1987, he was stopped by other driver, owner of film production company. He knows Rindaro from Battambang and because of his look similar to certain actor, famous at that time, he was offered role in film "Secret Tears in the Quiet Purple Night". With no acting training, his ability to act came merely from television and his own imagination. Although he has been promised to, Rindaro in fact never got paid for his acting in his first film. Even though the film wasn't really successful, he gathered attention of other producers, and so he was offered roles in other film. like Bopha Phnom Penh by Fai Som Ang or Ark Kambang Kech Sanyar. In the later he for the first time met actress Ampor Tevi, who then become his most common acting partner for more than decade. In the early 90's he usually star in more than ten movies per year.2 In 1994, he was cast in Peasants in Distress, drama film written and directed by in that time ruling king Norodom Sihanouk.3 As one of the most famous Cambodian celebrity of that time, Tep Rindaro with some other local celebrities attended a tour in United States of America, which has large community of Cambodians escaped during the Khmer Rouge era.24
Later career
During the late 90's Cambodian cinema suffered from crisis and with shortcome of roles, Tep Rindaro started to record karaoke videos. Some of them were with Dy Saveth, most popular actress of pre-Khmer Rouge cinema. Until 2001 all films made in Cambodia were cheap productions released directly to video, however this changed when Fai Sam Ang directed horror The Snake King's Child, based on famous Khmer legend about Snake King. This first full-length feature film for cinema to be produced in Cambodia since 1975 featured Thai leading man Winai Kraibutr, and Tep Rindaro was offered role of Snake King, with his longtime acting partner Ampor Tevi as his lover.5 This was also the last collaboration of this famous pair on screen, as Ampor Tevi some time after release ended her career and moved to USA.6 After big success of The Snake King’s Child, Tep Rindaro continued in acting in more films and karaoke videos, and was offered role in some Norodom Sihanouk productions, like comedy Lon Nol Lon Non Lonnoliens, and dramas Arsina, Le Cid Khmer and La Chatelaine de Banareath. Since 2010's, he starred in some Khmer Mekong Films TV series, such as AirWaves, Beauty of Life and My Family My Heart.2
Personal life
Tep Rindaro got married in 1987, in marriage arranged by parents of both sides. They've got one daughter, however the relationship lasted for only one year, before the couple got divorced in 1988. Shortly after that, his ex-wife with daughter left Cambodia, and are now living abroad. He never got married again, but he has been taking care of two children of his deceased sister.24
