Doncram has been a fan of wikipedia since mid-2005, and began editing actively in Fall, 2007. Has created over 5,000 Wikipedia articles. Have been listed in the top 30 of wikipedia editors by article count and in the top 200 by number of edits.
I identify highly with retired editor Fastily's comments about a horribly negative culture that can prevail within wikipedia, at User talk:Fastily, though not with his most dire predictions, as the contributions we've collectively made are here to stay.
I am proud to have built, with others, the great list-article system covering about 85,000 National Register of Historic Places-listed historic sites in the United States. Which required development of more than 3,000 supporting disambiguation pages, and is supported by a network of articles on more than 600 NRHP architects, more than 100 NRHP builders, and more than 20 NRHP engineers. I've started the majority of articles of each type, and contributed to almost every one. And I am proud to have made many other contributions within WikiProject National Register of Historic Places, including development of featured-list-worthy List of NHLs in NY and others.
And proud to have founded the international WikiProject Historic sites, which quietly serves the needs of many disparate wikipedians trying to do good work.
My main goal in Wikipedia participation has been to contribute collaboratively with others in developing material on non-controversial historic site topics. I have had plenty of fun and satisfaction in working with others in article development drives in this topic area and some others (like addressing the once-huge problem of un-referenced biographies of living persons). My main personal experience in Wikipedia, an unexpectedly overriding one, however, is my experiencing huge amounts of contention that in my opinion amounts to longterm bullying and harassment. Which was muddied with all sorts of crazy assertions against me, some of which attract some agreement at times. Whether or not others agree that certain other individuals meant to drag me down, or agree whether their following behavior has satisfactorily been proven to be harassment or bullying in one administrative proceeding or another, that is my personal opinion and experience. That indeed Wikipedia is a place where that goes on. How could it be otherwise? Wikipedia is not different than other social settings. And it cannot be wrong for me, or anyone, to note that bullying and harassment are on my mind, and that I and some others tried to document that in a recent arbitration proceeding. I do note and acknowledge that the arbitration findings did not clearly agree that harassment and bullying occurred (though they imposed at least one consequence consistent with my assertions). In fact the arbitrators made a point to assert a finding that following-type behavior does not necessarily constitute bullying. And to assert that my previous assertions of bullying and harassment were not borne out in previous administrative discussions.. And I am accepting of the consequences imposed by the arbitration. I will try to make the rulings work for me and for Wikipedia. However, I didn't come to Wikipedia wanting to learn about bullying and harassment, but that still is my most salient experience. And I vow to make a difference, going forward, to help Wikipedia address that important topic. Perhaps that can be done by developing a community understanding of what constitutes bullying and harassment within Wikipedia. So that further administrative discussions including arbitration can be guided by some standard identifying when bullying and harassment has happened. So that future cases of bullying and harassment can be cut short sooner, and so that future dragged-out cases when it does happen--hopefully not involving me as a target--can be addressed fairly, and so that the worse consequences of such behavior within Wikipedia can be reduced. Wikipedia is a great project, and it is a shame to let it get dragged down, by the horrendously costly but fairly normal processes of humans finding ways to hurt other humans. There are pretty good procedures to address this in other organizations; it's time Wikipedia came to some better understanding and adopted some best practices that have worked elsewhere.
Anyhow, in 2013 I am under arbitration restrictions preventing editor SarekOfVulcan from interacting with me, and vice versa, and preventing me from starting new articles directly in mainspace. It currently feels to me, while recently working on some new historic site articles, that I am on a harassment holiday! Yippee! I can totally enjoy a period of quiet, thanks.

BLPs
Back a couple years ago now, there was quite a public flap about Biographies of Living Persons. I eventually chose to pitch in to help a good team of editors reduce the backlog of BLP articles without references, in order to meet a publicized 6 month goal. I took care of more than 2,700 of them (see User:Doncram/IMDBzap) on my own, and I think I made a great deal of difference in restoring momentum forward to meet the goal, which was met. I tended to the public announcement of that being met in the Wikipedia newsletter, which I think went a ways towards mollifying various disagreements. --doncram 22:10, 16 July 2012 (UTC)
Toad Suck, Arkansas and other place/geo articles
- Toad Suck, Arkansas, in the news now in August 2012, is an article that I created in 2009. Article not much developed since, it was always a funny name.
