Wikipedia:WikiProject Shakespeare/Assessment
Welcome to the assessment department of WikiProject Shakespeare. This department focuses on assessing the quality of Wikipedia's articles related to William Shakespeare, including his works and derivitive works. The article ratings are used within the project itself to aid in recognising excellent contributions and identifying topics in need of further work.
The ratings are done in a distributed fashion through parameters in the {{Wikiproject Shakespeare}} project banner; this causes the articles to be placed in the appropriate sub-categories of Category:Shakespeare articles by quality and Category:Shakespeare articles by importance.

How to assess articles
You can assess articles by placing the {{Wikiproject Shakespeare}} banner on its talk page (not the article page!) and using the two parameters, class (to assess the quality) and importance (to assess the priority).
Quality assessments
An article's quality assessment is generated from the class parameter in the {{Wikiproject Shakespeare}} project banner on its talk page:
- {{Wikiproject Shakespeare|class=???}}
The following values may be used for the class parameter to describe the quality of the article:
| FA (for featured articles only; adds articles to Category:FA-Class Shakespeare articles) | ||
| A (adds articles to Category:A-Class Shakespeare articles) | ||
| GA (for good articles only; adds articles to Category:GA-Class Shakespeare articles) | ||
| B (adds articles to Category:B-Class Shakespeare articles) | B | |
| C (adds articles to Category:C-Class Shakespeare articles) | C | |
| Start (adds articles to Category:Start-Class Shakespeare articles) | Start | |
| Stub (adds articles to Category:Stub-Class Shakespeare articles) | Stub | |
| FL (for featured lists only; adds articles to Category:FL-Class Shakespeare articles) | ||
| List (adds articles to Category:List-Class Shakespeare articles) | List |
For pages that are not articles, the following values can also be used for the class parameter:
| Category (for categories; adds pages to Category:Category-Class Shakespeare articles) | Category | |
| Disambig (for disambiguation pages; adds pages to Category:Disambig-Class Shakespeare articles) | Disambig | |
| File (for files; adds pages to Category:File-Class Shakespeare articles) | File | |
| Portal (for portal pages; adds pages to Category:Portal-Class Shakespeare articles) | Portal | |
| Project (for project pages; adds pages to Category:Project-Class Shakespeare articles) | Project | |
| Template (for templates; adds pages to Category:Template-Class Shakespeare articles) | Template | |
| NA (for any other pages where assessment is unnecessary; adds pages to Category:NA-Class Shakespeare articles) | NA | |
| ??? (articles for which a valid class has not yet been provided are listed in Category:Unassessed Shakespeare articles) | ??? |
The class parameter should be assigned according to the quality scale below.
Quality scale
| Class | Criteria | Reader's experience | Editing suggestions | Example | ||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
The article has attained featured article status by passing an official review.
|
Professional, outstanding, and thorough; a definitive source for encyclopedic information. | No further content additions should be necessary unless new information becomes available; further improvements to the prose quality are often possible. | L'incoronazione di Poppea (as of August 2010) |
|||
The article is well organized and essentially complete, having been reviewed by impartial reviewers from this WikiProject or elsewhere. Good article status is not a requirement for A-Class.
|
Very useful to readers. A fairly complete treatment of the subject. A non-expert in the subject would typically find nothing wanting. | Expert knowledge may be needed to tweak the article, and style problems may need solving. Peer review may help. | 102nd Intelligence Wing (as of March 2010) |
|||
The article has attained good article status by passing an official review.
|
Useful to nearly all readers, with no obvious problems; approaching (but not equalling) the quality of a professional encyclopedia. | Some editing by subject and style experts is helpful; comparison with an existing featured article on a similar topic may highlight areas where content is weak or missing. | Usain Bolt (as of November 2009) |
|||
| B | The article is mostly complete and without major problems, but requires some further work to reach good article standards.
|
Readers are not left wanting, although the content may not be complete enough to satisfy a serious student or researcher. | A few aspects of content and style need to be addressed. Expert knowledge may be needed. The inclusion of supporting materials should also be considered if practical, and the article checked for general compliance with the Manual of Style and related style guidelines. | KV55 (as of November 2009) |
||
| C | The article is substantial, but is still missing important content or contains much irrelevant material. The article should have some references to reliable sources, but may still have significant problems or require substantial cleanup.
|
Useful to a casual reader, but would not provide a complete picture for even a moderately detailed study. | Considerable editing is needed to close gaps in content and solve cleanup problems. | Architecture of Sweden (as of May 2009) |
||
| Start | An article that is developing, but which is quite incomplete and, most notably, lacks adequate reliable sources.
|
Provides some meaningful content, but most readers will need more. | Providing references to reliable sources should come first; the article also needs substantial improvement in content and organisation. | Real analysis (as of November 2006) |
||
| Stub | A very basic description of the topic.
|
Provides very little meaningful content; may be little more than a dictionary definition. | Any editing or additional material can be helpful. The provision of meaningful content should be a priority. | Geodia gibberosa (as of July 2009) |
||
The article has attained featured list status.
|
Professional standard; it comprehensively covers the defined scope, usually providing a complete set of items, and has annotations that provide useful and appropriate information about those items. | No further content additions should be necessary unless new information becomes available. | Avatar: The Last Airbender (season 3) (as of December 2012) |
|||
| List | Meets the criteria of a stand-alone list, which is an article that contains primarily a list, usually consisting of links to articles in a particular subject area. | There is no set format for a list, but its organization should be logical and useful to the reader. | Lists should be lists of live links to Wikipedia articles, appropriately named and organized. | List of aikidoka (as of June 2007) |
Importance assessment
An article's importance assessment is generated from the importance parameter in the {{Wikiproject Shakespeare}} project banner on its talk page:
- {{Wikiproject Shakespeare| ... | importance=??? | ...}}
| Top |
| High |
| Mid |
| Low |
| ??? |
The following values may be used for importance assessments:
- Top - adds articles to Category:Top-importance Shakespeare articles
- High - adds articles to Category:High-importance Shakespeare articles
- Mid - adds articles to Category:Mid-importance Shakespeare articles
- Low - adds articles to Category:Low-importance Shakespeare articles
- Unknown - Any article not rated for importance is automatically added to the Category:Unknown-importance Shakespeare articles.
Importance scale
| Label | Criteria | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Top | Main articles about William Shakespeare and his works. Any good encyclopedia should have an excellent article on this subject. Extremely high probability that non-Shakespeare specialists will be looking at this article.. | Shakespeare, Hamlet |
| High | Articles that are important in the Shakespearean field but less so to non-specialists. | Lord Chamberlain's Men, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead |
| Mid | Subject is notable or significant within the broad Shakespearean community, but not particularly well known or important outside of it | Anne Hathaway, Shakespearean authorship question |
| Low | Subject is of importance only to Shakespearean specialists | John Shakespeare, Gertrude and Claudius |

Requested assessments
- There have been massive blocks of analysis added to Antony and Cleopatra; before removing it indiscriminately I think someone ought to take a look at the quality of it and the article as a whole. Thanks! 109.149.73.110 (talk) 09:35, 3 June 2012 (UTC)
